Lastly, we must remember that politics always come into play with these sorts of issues. It is important to keep in mind that international legal applications and policies do not take place in a vacuum. Many of these principles and alternatives must be viewed within the scope of the geopolitical matters and international relations involved. In the case of Syria, the state has long-standing political and economic ties with Russia and China, two permanent members of the Security Council. Together, these two State actors can exert a good deal of influence in the decision-making process in the international community. Because of this, modest and mild reparations for Syria have prevailed.

In conclusion, the conflict in Syria presents many different important legal and political issues that will continue to shape the discussion as events unfold in the Middle Eastern nation. As U.S. lawmakers debate the merits of various proposals moving forward, arming and assistance rebels does not appear out of the question and additional international support seems evident, as the truce clearly is shaky at best. The Assad regime has continually failed to uphold its end of the bargain and we have little reason to believe that it will honor its obligations under the Secretary General’s peace deal. All things considered, this situation does not look to be coming to an end any time soon, so it will be interesting to see how the crisis plays out and how various stakeholders continue their involvement and how the region will be affected by this latest popular uprising in a volatile area of the world.
