The exterior of the device is built of glass, a material that is extremely fragile and will break if the device collides with a hard surface. If the glass chips or shatters, the user should not touch or attempt to remove the piece. He or she should replace the glass immediately through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. This type of damage is often due to misuse or abuse, in which case the repair is not covered under the warranty and the user will be required to pay an additional charge. There are many precautions that one may take to avoid this accident such as by purchasing a case that will protect the device against scratches or abrasion.

Keeping the Outside of the Phone Clean

The policy advises the user to clean the device as soon as it comes into contact with any substances that can leave permanent marks such as ink, dyes, makeup, dirt, good, oils and lotions. Once the device is disconnected from any cables and shut down, the user should take a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth and carefully wipe the area that is contaminated. He or she is discouraged from using ordinary household agents such as windows cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, ammonia or abrasives because their ingredients tend to weaken the device screen’s oleophobic coating.

Avoiding Water and Wet Location

Exposure of the device to water or rain will impair it which implies that the user should avert from operating the device near wet locations. Similarly, to spill food or other liquids will also impair the device. In the event that water does enter the device, it should be disconnected from any cables, shut down and cleaned following the same directives explained in the section Keeping the Outside of the Phone Clean. This type of damage is due to misuse is not covered under warranty.

Repairing or Modifying iPhone

The device does not contain user-serviceable parts, with exception of the SIM card and tray. Any modifications made by the user or an unauthorized service such as removing external screws or the back cover may be grounds for termination of the warranty agreement which states that Apple is required to repair damages that are not caused due to misuse or abuse. The user should always bring the device to the approved services in order to ensure that he or she’s warranty extends until the end of the period.

Battery Replacement

The battery of the device should be replaced by Apple or Apple Authorized Service Providers, not by the user.

Charging iPhone

The user should only charge the device with the Apple Dock Connector to USB Cable and (1) an Apple-branded product or accessory that is designed to work with the device or (2) a third-party accessory that is accepted by Apple and displays the Works with iPhone or Made for iPhone logo or (3) a high-power USB port that of USB standard or (4) a mobile phone power adapter of interoperability standard. The policy notes that not all micro USB power adapters of interoperability standard are compatible with the device. While using any of the recited products is permissible, Apple is not liable for the operation of, or damage caused by, products or accessory that are not commercialized by their business.

The policy provides instructions on how to properly assemble the units allowing the user to charge the device and lists conditions under which the user should unplug the Apple USB Power Adapter specifically. Such conditions include if the power cord is frayed, if the adapter is exposed to liquid, if the user believes that it needs to be repaired etc.

Avoiding Hearing Damage

To listen to music or other sounds at an excessive volume may cause permanent hearing loss to the user. Being conscious of how loud the sounds are playing is critical. The policy recommends to the user to set the device at a low volume before inserting the receivers, earbuds, headphones, speakerphones or earpieces and to adjust it based on the he or she’s level of hearing.

In the case that the user begins to experience ringing in the ears or muffled speech, they should withdraw from bearing intense sounds and contact their doctor. The policy describes preventive measures supported by hearing experts that can be taken to reduce the risk of hearing impairment.

Emergency Calls

Since the device is wireless, it is not deemed reliable for communicating important messages. There are many factors that can interfere with the device which would restrict the user from placing emergency service calls. Location is often associated to these issues: numbers typically vary by region and depending on the cellular network carrier, connection can be limited. Devices that are inactivated or that are not configured would not work either.

Driving and Riding

The device is a source of distraction and a cause for disruption for users who are driving or riding a bicycle and operating the device simultaneously. The policy discourages the user from using the device alone or with earphone while performing these activities. He or she who is pressed to make a phone call or for all other purposes should pull to the side of the road and operate the device as needed. The user should consider obtaining a compatible, hands-free unit if manipulation of the device is essential and occurs frequently. Laws and regulations that deal with use of mobile devices must always be obeyed.

Navigating Safety

The user should not rely entirely on the navigation applications that are pre-installed on or downloaded to the device to guide them. Maps and directions are retrieve from data services which are sometimes outdated or even unavailable in certain areas. As a result, the routes may be imprecise or incomplete. The digital compass that is located in the corner of the device may not be accurate as well. The policy advises the user to be alert and to trust posted signs first if the information is not consistent.

For Vehicles Equipped with an Air Bag

The policy advises the user to store the device and accessories at a safe distance from the area surrounding the air bag.

Seizures, Blackouts and Eyestrain
