Aldous Huxley, a well known english writer and philosopher of the 20th century, summarizes this quite well, he says: “Technological progress has merely provided us with more efficient means for regression”.
A final issue we can point out is a view held by certain philosophers in regards to progress, such as Jean Jacque Rousseau, who although have nothing against progress pre se, say that progress hasn’t made us more virtuous, and so can we really call it progress ?
To conclude, progress, isn’t, good period, progress is good, but has its drawbacks, consequences, problems and opens the door for greater means of regression. That being said, I think these issues are merely the price of progress, it’s only natural that with great power comes great responsibility ; and so I think if we take responsibility and take the necessary precautions towards our actions, if we balance out progress’s negative effects with concern, foresight, regulation, and discipline, it is completely appropriate to continue on with progress. Some important questions we ought to ask ourselves are : what does it mean to take responsibility and the necessary precautions towards our actions and how do we go about doing so ? And with these final thoughts we can only and ironically hope that these issues will be resolved with more progress.
