Marylou :

I first learned that working in the Management Control Department at the headquarters of a group is not the same as working in one of its subsidiaries.

Their activities are not the same. This has allowed me, having become aware of these differences, to know where I would like to work.

In the headquarters of a group, they control the activities of their subsidiaries but also their own business. Each year, a budget is prepared especially for the headquarters and it is their responsibility to monitor.

Allianz places particular every effort to ensure that this budget is really respected.

Jeanne :

OK, but could you explain what people do in management control ?

Marylou :

I will give two examples. My main task was focused on the budget.

Every month we must establish a monitoring array by service for every manager about their expenses.

Here is an example of what I've done for services.

To construct them, we must combine two forecast and the actual expenditures.

For example, we are in the month of november. A forecast is established at the beginning of October and another in mid November. This predicts spending November and see the differences (more or less) compared to what they had planned and so locate the source of any problems, the staff cost or travel or the fees. These markings allow us to help rectify the problems immediately or the next month

I made the reconciliation of intercompany billing estimates based on data reported by foreign affiliates in SAP. SAP is an accounting software.This mission involved comparing the statements amount of subsidiaries that they had established themselves and the statements amount that headquarters has estimated. So verify theirs correspondence and if there are differences try to understand why not and correct them together

But these tasks are only a small part of the mission of the department of management control.

Jeanne :

And so what do you think about this internship ?

Marylou :

To conclude, I would say I had a great opportunity to be part of this group. I was able to refine my analytical mind and my sense of rigor.

On the human level, I had the chance to meet main actors in this group and thus establish strong relationships particularly with foreign directors ...I got a very good letter of recommendation that encouraged me.

By following this internship, I realized that I wanted to work in the headquarters of a large group that performs multiple activities in several areas.

Jeanne, would you like to be part of a group like this?

Jeanne:

For me working in a big firm is more than you say. Because you can travel and work with different people from different countries. However, this sector is not the one I’m interested in. So, maybe if I had had the choose I wouldn’t chose to do my internship in that firm but in an other.
