As regards the characters, they are strange, and that's an understatement. They are all intriguing and mysterious, but above all original. Because it is very rare to see the same portraits elsewhere. The characters are presented to us as through a giant spider web. Laura Palmer is the one that connects all the characters, she is the center of everything. Each point is connected by a wire to another point. Sarah Palmer phone Bobby's parents, then Bobby's sports teacher, before the camera shows us where Bobby is actually. One can reproach the too great number of main characters. Indeed, the pilot episode presents some twenty characters, all more crazy and shifted than the others. Some characters are very stereotyped: The blonde secretary with the unbearable voice or Andy, the whined. Here, we find the humor of Frost.
The second part of the pilot leaves room for characters more and more absurd and surprising : Doctor Jacoby, a mysterious armless, the "Lady at the log", An obsessed of silent curtains, Dale Cooper on a background of jazz music, talking to Diane, the secretary who will remain invisible throughout the series. he loves strawberry tarts and seems to obey only indecipherable fancies.
The pilot episode already includes "drama": The tone of this pilot is mostly sad, cold. The scenes showing the mourning of Palmer parents are particularly striking and the cry of a comrade in the yard, gives cold in the back.
There are comic elements in this pilot episode: for example, the discovery of Laura Palmer's corpse leads to a phone call to the police station, and his secretary Lucy Moran. His explanations to Sherif Truman to pick up the phone set the tone of the tragic and absurd humor of the series
Clues already reveal the truth about Laura's death ... For example, the seemingly gratuitous appearance of a mysterious armless,The discreet appearance of an owl, The quick reflection in the mirror that reveals '' Ben''
There are historical or cinematographic references in this series : Harry S. Truman, the sheriff of Twin Peaks, bears the same name as one of the presidents of the USA who ruled the country from 1945 to 1953. Similarly, the sign hang in Harry's office, "The buck stopped here", Alludes to President Truman's famous motto, "The buck stops here". James Hurley is the typical character of the "romantic rebel". It is strongly inspired by James Dean. The first shot of the oppening credits of Twin Peaks, representing a bird on a branch, echoes the final plan of Blue Velvet (1986), the previous film of Lynch, where the same kind of bird was also perched on a branch.
>>> To conclude, Twin Peaks" is an original police series that does not use the same branch lines as its counterparts
The introduction of this episode presents a mixture of anguish, drama and comedy, the three major traits of Twin Peaks.
It is a series that has aged very well; And which has surely inspired many other series. I am thinking in particular of the new series Stranger things
