Auden wants to remind his readers that life and love are short and are affected by the vicissitudes of existence like sickness and time. Love is sweet, but it exists in a universe where there is suffering and death. He may want to show that death can be terrible when you lose someone you love, because it is the end of “your world”.
He may also want us to understand how deeply affected he is by the loss of his friend.
Finally, he may have written this poem in order to express his feelings, because his grief is so strong that he can't communicate, and poetry becomes a way to talk.
The title reflects his state of mind. The poem may be a way to remember his beloved, because it is like a song which can be easily remembered. The writing allows him to feel close to his friend. He doesn't want to forget the man he loved, and Auden sums up this idea in the last line of the “Night Mail” ; “For who can bear to feel himself forgotten.” The speaker may be addressing an audience of mourner at a funeral. It is a public poem, meant for lots of people to hear.
