Oral anglais: the brain and languages, how does it work?

As you probably know, we have two kinds of memory:

- short terme and

- long term memory.

To acquire a language it’s long term memory which comes into play.

Here as well there is different type:

- procedurale memory

- semantic memory

- episodic memory

The one that interests us here is semantic memory. Indeed, it’s this one which allows to constitute

a lexicon, to recognize words even if they are deformed or with a strange accent. This register take

place in wernicke.

- How to learn ?

To learn a new language, the best possible way is the immersion. In this case, the brain acts as if it was our native speaker.

A new learning technique was invented. It’s LinguaSted, an online social language learning platform.

The principle is simple, it is based on the repetition. To learn a word, it will be repeted with time

intervals which increase between each repetition. If the learner make a mistake, the cycle start again.

Otherwise there is a reputed institute for learning like Middleburry college. this institution is based on neuroscience to improve its techniques.

- Difficulty

Sometimes, it can be not so easy. Neuroscience studies showed why pronunciation is so difficult

for some. Actually, each sound stimule one part of brain. But for some people, two different sounds

like r and l for exemple stimule only a zone. Thereby, pronunciation of these two sound will be the same.

III/ Conclusion

To sum up, learning is a complex process which involve different structures and different functions.

And as a final parting thought, i think i will teach you something by telling you that in addition to

stimulate the two areas we talked about, learning a language stimulates pleasure’s areas.

In fact, it was proved that it’s the same areas which are whet when we eat chocolate or consume drugs.

The supposed reason for this phenomenon its that during childhood, we learn our first language

with our parents with love and a lot of affection.

Whats more, learning a language stimulate neuronal activity and at the same time reduce neuronal degeneration.

To conclude, if you don’t want to have a neurodegenerative disease, you have to learn english !
