“ I will come to the main purpose for which I have come to see you” (l.11)
“ South depended upon you, now the whole country will depend upon you” (l.12)
They were slave, they still not . They were the reason why the South was so wealthy and now they will have the chance to be free to have lands to cultivate and to be part of the country with nominal rights.
2) The new start
At the end of the third paragraph and at the beginning of the forth we can see imperative verbs , that are employed so Delany gives to former slaves advices to succeed in life.
“ Get up” (l.13), “Grow” ( l.15) He wants them to have their own business.
He gives them examples of what they can cultivate “ rice and cotton” (l.16), “tobacco” (l.18) and provides them land as they can cultivate “ There are whole squares at Dublin and Liverpool” ( l. 19).
>Delany encourages them to become a “ wealthy and powerful population” ( l. 24). He tries to make them understand by using simple linkers “ but” (l.2), because ( l.7), so (l.18), so (l.20).
> He also uses conditionals to express the fact that everything is possible and that they have choices.
“ Get up a community of lands you can- if you cannot get any singly” (l. 13)
“ If you cannot get the land all of yourself, the community can, and so you can divide the profit” (l.17-18)
Here, Delany outlines to the freedmen that they have the key in their hands to succeed because they are free and it is time to get a new start and change their lifestyle as free people with nominal rights.
TR: The Civil War stamp out slavery in the South and pointed to former slave to have their own business and to break up with the economic dependency. However, some southern whites still abuse on black people and exploit them despite the assistance of the Freedmen's Bureau to the black.
Therefor, the Government takes measures to remove the last form of slavery for instance thanks to the Freedmen's Bureau.
II/The providing of the end of slavery
A/ The banishment of the last form of slavery, an unfinished work
Actually, Delany denounces the abusive situation of the blacks, who still slaves and insists on the fact that it is an unequal one in order to make people understand that he want to banish the last form of slavery because the abolition of slavery is an unfinished work.
1)an abusive situation
The enumeration of adjectives to qualify a slave l.25 signify that it is abnormal that some whites still practicing slavery, even tough black people are able to own land and have their own business: “barefooted, covered with rags and dirt” (l.25) Delany vilifies how slave were treated and shabby.
2) an unequal situation
> The speaker insists on the fact that the slave has been abused by his owner since he earned only “ 30 cent a day” (l. 27)
compare to former slaves who can earn $90 with only one acre of crop of cotton per year and $900 with 10 acres of crop of cotton. “ Now, for instance, one acre will grow a crop of cotton of $90-- now a land with ten acres will bring $900 every year”(l.16-17). This comparison has a polemic goal. Delany proved that by following the Government, slavery will disappear
B/ The measure take by the Government
To stamp out slavery in the south the government took measures as to create the Freedmen's bureau.
Here Delany is a representative of one of the members.
> Delany advocates the slaves man of the assembly
He explains that it is an abusive and unequal situation that will be stop by the Government in an anaphora.
“ I will not have it, the Government will not have it, Government shall hear about it. I will tell the Government.” (l. 28-29)
> He uses proof to reassure black people that there will be no more slavery in America.
“ We have now 200,000 of our men well drilled in arms and used to warfare” (l. 30-31)
He underlines the fact that his soldiers are stronger, larger than white owners and convinces freedmen to have a normal life since now they are free.
> His idea of the end of slavery are very strong, he expresses those many times in many manner.
“ I tell you slavery is over, and shall never return again” ( l.30)
“ I tell you that slavery shall not come back again, if you are determined it will not returned again”
(l.32)
> In the last sentence the word “ determined” means that the lot of black people is depending on their choices to adhere to the idea of the Freedmen's bureau or not. To achieve their goal as freedmen they should follow the Government's solution.
To put it in a nutshell, Delany appeals to the end of slavery by explaining to the former slave that they should join the idea of the Freedmen's Bureau and accept their aid . In other hand for the last slave the Freedmen's Bureau engages themselves to fight for freedom. The Freedmen's permitted the end of slavery in all the country and thanks to them the Congress passed the 14th Amendment which recognizes former slaves to be citizens of the United State, then the 15th Amendment which guarantees the freedmen's right to vote in 1870. However, it makes way for segregation between 1870- 1960. Despite all those fights for equality racism still exist.
