» (p.60 l.27-28). He realizes here that it’s his fault. He should never have created this monster. He becomes to feel very guilty and suffers of anguishes.
When he learns that Justine is accused. He doesn’t believe that. He knows that she is innocent.
«You are all mistaken, I know the murderer. Justine, poor, good Justine, is innocent » (p.62 l.27-28) Victor knows the truth but keeps it for himself, it’s impossible to tell to someone because nobody would understand and everyone will be take him for a madman.
During the trial, we can see that Victor feels very guilty. He says « It was to be decided, whether the result of my curiosity and lawless devices would cause the death of two of my fellow-beings » (p.63 l. 34-36). For him, all that is happening in his family is his fault. First of all, the death of William and now the trial of Justine. This trial for Victor is horrible. He says « Justine also was a girl of merit, and possessed qualities which promised to render her life happy: now all was to be obliterated in an ignominious grave; and I the cause » (p.64 l.1-3) Victor feels very guilty about the destiny of Justine. She is innocent and endures something that she hasn’t done. Even he says the truth he won’t help her because nobody would believe him.
« Anguish and despair has penetrated into the core of my heart. » (p.69 l.13-14) We can see with this quotation how much Victor feels bad and guilty. He has now also the death of Justine on his conscience.
« This also was my doing! And my father’s woe, and the desolation of that late so smiling home- all was the work of my thrice-accursed hands ! (p.69 l.34-36). He says once again that everything that is happening in his family is his fault. He should never create this monster. He feels like the murderer of William and Justine. If he had not created it, nothing will happened. Everything is the result of his wretched creation.
