Morocco is one of the most dynamic exporting countries around the world. It has the leading position on the market when it comes to canned sardines.
There are three main product types that affect the market value of the exports: canned and semi-cured products (38%), frozen products (41%) and fresh products (13%).
Next to canned sardines we can find a lot of products such as: cephalopods, white fish, canned fish, frozen fish, dark flesh fish and shellfish.
Buyers:
Morocco's targeted customers are multiple and diversified, we find the Moroccan fishery products all over the world but the European market remains the main destination for approximately 70% of them. The other destinations for these products are: Africa, Asia, Japan, Middle East, America and many more...

As we may notice on the table above, exports to Africa have nearly tripled between 2000 and 2011 peaking at 1900MDH in 2009. We can also notice that fishery products exports to Japan and Asia have dropped over the years: 727MDH in 2011 against 2700MDH in 2000.
Competitors:
Morocco's competitors are all over the world. We find China and Peru at the top of the list, in the third place we find Indonesia after overtaking the USA in 2007. Morocco actually produces nearly 1% of the world production around 1 million tons. See the graph below to find all major competitors.

From the graph above we can see that China is by far the biggest exporter with 10.6% of overall fishery products which is the equivalent of $ 96Billion in 2009. Norway and Thailand and Vietnam follow behind respectively with 7.4%, 6.5% and 4.5%. Furthermore, the contribution of the developing countries to world fishery products exports is considerable with nearly half of the overall exported volume. But these countries stay dependent on markets that offer the top export opportunities for fishery products.
