in general. Malala makes a speech on the importance of girl’s education, she’s on the balcony with 193 (one hundred and ninety three) young peoples who carry blue lanterns, they represent the hope. Malala it’s not intimidated by the ceremony because she tells the world leaders to be quiet, to listen, to look up to the balcony, to look up to the 193 members of the new generation. Presence of other children gives weight to what she’s saying. She thinks that education is the key to peace, and she is not afraid of defending the cause of the women. For that, she dares to address every one assembled, to ask for silence, to use visual effects like the color of lanterns and repetitions to support her words, and to use concrets examples even if they shock. Malala is a heroine, she tries to make change the despite her young age, to address top leader’s meeting, and put her life in danger.
Some heroes, by the strength of their success, become almost myths. The perfect example of that is Greg Mortensen, author and hero of the best seller « Three Cups of Tea » (co writes with David Olivier Relin), thousand a million of copies were sold. I studied the cover of the book. This best seller, the story of Greg Mortensen, a homeless mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan’s treacherous K2, was inspired by a chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school. We see on the book cover, 3 girls focused on their books, they are working in cramped conditions, squeezed together on a bench with no table. Because, the fight of Greg Mortensen is the access to education for the girl, he actually 55 schools built especially for girls, that offer a balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. For his actions, in 2009, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and he was awarded the star of Pakistan. « Three Cups of Tea » was very appreciated by the public, Greg Mortensen compared to Indiana Jones for his humanitarian adventures. Mortensen did talks and conferences all across the USA. He became a kind of myth.
To conclude, I think the concept of myths and heroes has an important place in the society. Define someone as hero is acceding to its causes, goals, which can sometimes be good and just as bad or faked. Some people or characters are considered heroes are in reality impostors or corrupted. Narrated and presented to the children, myths and heroes are part of their education. There are heroes, of course, but there are also heroic causes, like a girl’s education which is skill crucial to this day.
