Steps 5: Review and continuous improvement

After having done that all the hard work, all implantation, undertaking a regular review of the system will allow the company to ensure all of it. The regularity of this review will mainly depend of the size of the business and how much has changed is the company. It is recommended that it should be done every twelve months.

It is not the same that an audit as the audit is about verifying that the system is doing what it is supposed to, whereas a review should:

- take into account any non-conformance

- evaluate any further training needed

- evaluate the Systems suitability and effectiveness (i.e. are the procedures ensuring the actions n the Environmental Action Plan are being carried out)

- update the Environmental Action Plan

- consult with staff on effectiveness

Every new aspect (good, services or process) of a business should be passed through the five steps describe previously.

- Based on the article by Florida and Davison (2001), explain why do companies implement EMS.

Companies use Environmental Management Systems to have a way to control their environmental impacts. Indeed, even a small business or a business that does not have a huge environmental impact has to manage its activities using for example EMS. Using EMS allows companies to open more and more opportunities for cost savings, the improvements of the operational efficiencies, and it allows to improve the business image. Indeed, a company that cares about the earth and how its activity impacts it, gets a great image, consumers, partners and others infrastructures. It also changes the way the company works, caring about the environment makes the whole business process more healthy and conscious. d) Find the example of a multinational firm that is certified ISO 14001 and analyze the possible motivations that leaded the company to implement an EMS (this may be the company you are currently following as a group assignment for this course).

Nowadays, companies and organizations are passionate about protected the environment and fighting climate change; thus an environmental Management System is affective on global scale. Indeed, it’s a tool, which allows the companies and organizations to focus on their environmental responsibilities and helps them to manage the environmental impacts of their business and implement environment protection measures.
