Orwell, just like Vonnegut, ends his essay by giving rules to writing well. He recommends to never use a long word if a shorter one is useable and to always cut a word out if you can. Vonnegut makes the same point when he says “have the guts to cut”. Orwell sums the thesis of this essay well, saying “It is easier -- even quicker, once you have the habit -- to say In my opinion it is not an unjustifiable assumption that than to say I think.” Keeping it simple is not as easy as it seems, however, it enables you to write in style. It not only makes the reader understand you but it makes it easier for them to like your style. You can have the most interesting topic but fail to convey it if you do not pay attention to simplicity.

This essay tries to show the importance of simplicity. As authors like Orwell and Shakespeare show, it is sometimes harder to write simply than the opposite. Even experienced authors commit this mistake and, thus, their style suffers along with the readers. To write in style, according to Vonnegut, writers should also write about subjects they care about and to be sincere. This will make your writing easier to you and will allow the reader to peek into your experiences. You should keep the reader in mind at all times, having pity for them as reading is not simple. Instead of spending effort on the complexity of your writing, use it in finding interesting topics and arguments. However, above all, simplicity should be the number one criterion when you desire to write in style.
