3.1. The title ’’ The Chrysalids’’ refers to a step the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. The Old people represent the caterpillar, Waknuk is the cocoon and the butterfly is the Sealand people.

C. The Chrysalids is futuristic and has innovations to technology and science.

1. Telepathy is an advanced form of communication.

1.1. Telepathy is a power that the protagonist possesses along with other key characters. Their power is considered a deviation as it is not considered normal. This form of communication may have been common before the nuclear attack because New Zealand/Sealand because they carry the same superpower.

2. Sealand woman appears in a spacecraft and paralyzes everyone with a spiderweb.

2.1. The Sealand woman is the only advanced technology in the novel. She appears in a spacecraft that looks like ‘’fish-shaped craft’ (Wydnham, 190)’ and paralyzes everyone in the field with a material similar to a cobweb. This makes it clear that they have progressed in science and in technology.

3. The Old People in the book is the reader.

3.1 The book’s time setting is centuries before an attack. The reader is the society before this event.

The Chrysalids is a science-fiction novel because it’s story is realistic, it has futuristic elements and it sends messages to it’s readers. John Wyndham’s novel possesses many characteristics that make it a science-fiction. Science-fiction often caters to a teen and young adult audience, this may be an author’s way to relay a message or warning about the future onto the youth in a way they won’t ignore.
