The ending of the story is the tipping point of the story. The story makes a drastic change, from the empathetic tone that it had. The narrator was sad about Sonny and how his life was. The narrator transforms into a kinder human being. He states, "Then he began to make it his. It was very beautiful because it wasn't hurried and it was no longer a lament. I seem to hear,” he continues, “Freedom lurked around us and I understood, at last, that he could help us to be free if we could listen, that he would never be free until we did." Not only does he understand his brother but he also takes in the love of freedom that his brother has been and continues expressing since the beginning of the story. It is also a window into Sonny’s world that lets the narrator understand his brother. Furthermore, the narrator also seems to forget about his problems and sets in Sonny’s shoes. "That this was only a moment, that the world waited outside, as hungry as a tiger, and that trouble stretched above us, longer than the sky," he states. This quote demonstrates that Sonny’s brother recognizes that much of his issues have unquestionably not vanished, but rather as he watches Sonny play, he starts to understand that he should make the most of his life. He ought to quit stressing over Sonny's past and future since Sonny has discovered something he adores. Finally, music acts like a non-verbal emotional point of common connection between the brother. It’s an epiphany that resolves the gap. We can also agree that music and the mother are a similar point of connection for the two brothers.
To conclude, the story has a lot of content. It shows that communication can create and resolve problems. Sonny battles to be heard all through the story, especially by his sibling, because of many misunderstandings. At last, it is music, another mean of communication, that allow him to reestablish the contact with his brother.
