But what could help a person who’s suffering from bulimia quit this vicious circle? First of all, people have to admit they have some kind of eating disorder, telling themselves “I have a problem with food and I need to get rid of it” is already a good step for the recovery. Once they now about it, bulimics need to get help from family and professional help, it’s a team work. This is often the hardest part in the recovery, explaining your disorder to the ones you used to hide it from, but this is an essential step. Professional help will help you change your thoughts about yourself, how you look at yourself in the mirror. It’ll help you get rid of that image of thinness that media are spreading everywhere. Changing your mind about dieting and body shape is probably the most important phase through your cure. Professional help like psychotherapy would definitely help you accept the way you are. Besides that psychological and social help, medications are also available such as antidepressants, the most effective being SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor). For dangerous cases of bulimia, hospitalization may also be envisaged.

But it is known that people from America are more likely to get it due to the culture of “being thin”. Media play an important role when it comes to eating disorders. Some studies show that the highest rate of bulimia happens to adolescent females. Contemporary society denies the natural variety of women’s bodies and shows an “ideal shape”. Besides that fact, people who run a stressed life are also more likely to develop bulimia.
