The main focus of this report, will be intended to show how music enable things and helps employees behind a bar to work more efficiently and depending on what type of music they will be listening to, be more joyful, focused or even more reactive (Charles Murdock Diserens, 1926 ). Studies have been made on how music affects customer’s behaviour (spend more/less…), this study will be focused on the employees point of view and logically, the repercussion will be seen on customers and the work environment.

Talking about environnement, the project and the data that has been gathered will all be based around the France country and in particular, bar in 4 and 5 stars Hotel.

There is a reason and a purpose why - professionally and personally, I am interested in the subject. Music has always been a part of our everyday life, our working place does not make an exception. Personally, music helps to free myself from the Hospitality world, where everything has to be calculated and strict. When the music starts and kicks in, I can release the pressure and the anxiety amassed during the day. It goes the same way for everybody but professionally, it is important for each Hotel Bars to have an identity, an atmosphere or ambiance; and it goes mostly by the type of music played in the bar (the music has to be similar to the ambiance: Hard-rock will not suit a 5 star Parisian Hotel). I hope by bringing this subject on the table, managers will adapt their own music strategy according to the effect of each music on the behaviour, the ambiance, and the consequences.

The aim of this project can be summarised as: The effects of music on employees of hotel bars.

The Objectives will be and Research question will be:

- Objective N°1: To identify the music and its importance in the Hospitality industry for both employees and customers

- Research question N°1: Does it affect the employees as much as customers?

- Research question N°2: Is there a Bar type music?

- Objective N°2: To consider the effects of Music on Bar’s employees and how music is used

- Research question N°3: What music do to the body and mind?

- Research question N°4: Why is music so important for a Hotel Bar?

- Objective N°3: To determine the best ambiance for each type of hotel bar according to his standard/evaluate the effect of productivity

- Research question N°5: What ambiance goes well with this type of music?

- Research question N°6: What are the methods of measuring music effectiveness?

- Research question N°7: Is the productivity going up thanks to music in bars?

After this statement, it is essential to differ and classify the information and data that will be gathered by the researcher. Everything will be explained in the Methodology section of this report but though, the data will be separated in two parts:

- Primary data: observation, interviews, and questionnaires.

- Secondary data: everything that the researcher has read and can be applied to the field and aim of the project.

To help this project, we will need to go deeper into the reflection of music, beyond the mere thought of “music help people dance and make them happy”. Theories and articles will be used to answer some of the first research questions, although this is the theory based reflexion, the actual effect gathered thanks to questionnaires and interviews will be described in the Findings & Analysis section.

Literature Review

“A literature review is an assessment of a body of research that addresses a research question. It identifies what is already known about an area of study” (Garson and Lillvik, 2012). The purpose is generally to analyse the knowledge already published thanks to a classification and a comparison of research.

This literature review is here to answer to the question “How does music effect the behaviour of the employees working in a Hotel Bar?” but also to analyse the objectives and research questions which are:

The research questions are here to help the researcher to remain focus around the main problematic and the issues that it involves overall. The literature review is a first step into the field, since this part is based around the knowledge acquired by the researcher thought his lectures and readings on the chosen topic.

Going back to the topic now, music, and, the influence of music on employees of Hotel bars.

As easy it might seem, the topic of this research project has proven on many occasions, to be quite a difficult one. Indeed, lots of researches have already been made and assessed on the effect of music on customers in bar, the number of articles, books, questionnaires, interviews are phenomenal.

However, the point of view of the employees is not all the time putted in the front page. Because it is easier to measure the effect
