4. Marcella has a sense of humour, we can see this in many ways.

The first one (p.99 l.26) when she makes a joke about her widow’s weeds.

It’s quiet dark but it’s still humour.

(p.100 l19) she makes fun about Cal’s hygiene and laughs about what Lucy said, because her daughter shouted exactly this comment before my extract.(stinky poo)

(p.101 l.28) She laughs about Cal’s Joke even if it was indirectly a joke aboute her husband.

(p.101 l.38) Cal makes a joke about cleanliness, they often make fun about Cal’s hygiene.

Cal

During the whole extract we can feel Cal’s uneasiness.

(p.99 l.19-20) it clearly says that he « pretends » that’s why we can imagine he is quite uneasy when Marcella is talking about her husband because he knows exactly what happened to Robert as he is responsable for his death.

(p.99 l. 23) he « tried » so he fails to change the subject because Marcella immediately goes back to talking about her husband.

(p.100 l.32) he looks down at the floor this shows his shame and guilt, he feels trapped. He had to answer no

p101. l.29-30) he feels very guilty not to be able to accept Marcella’s help and kindness

he hesitates on how to respond, he eventually makes a joke about her suggestion.

Finally i would say that my extract is quite important. As now we know exactly what happened to Marcella and her daughter after the « accident » , her feelings and how she has dealt with the situation, we also now feel that Cal is living with a terrible guilt.and finally how Lucy is feeling and maybe not dealing so well with the situation. We especially learn more about Marcella’s behaviour on accepting that her husband has gone.
