The limits of the freedom of expression

Freedom of expression guarantees the right to say anything that is not considered abusive by French law, which precisely identifies exceptions. Absolute freedom of expression is not in our tradition

Yet you can’t confuse freedom of speech with freedom to injure people’s deep feelings.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen of 1789 states: "The free communication of thoughts and opinions is one of the most precious rights of man, every citizen may therefore speak, write and publish freely, subject to responsibility for the abuse of this freedom as shall be defined by law. »

Indeed, speaker's corner is a site for public speeches and debates on the open air. In this place, anyone can turn up and talk on almost any subject with the crowd. The oraters and the onlookers just have to respect the codes of conduct. This place was a public place used for exectutions. People where be hanged there, up to 24 people could by hanged at a time. Before dying the criminal could say a word. Hence this place today as an open public debate.

Speakers' Corner is a traditional site for public speeches and debates since the mid 1800's when protests and demonstrations took place in Hyde Park. It is located on the north-east edge of Hyde Park, nearest Marble Arch and Oxford Street.

Historic figures such as Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin and George Orwell were known to often use the area to demonstrate free speech.

In 1872, an act of parliament set aside this part of Hyde Park for public speaking. Even today, on a Sunday morning, it's not unusual to find crowds gathering at Speakers' Corner to listen to enthusiasts expounding their views. Anyone can turn up unannounced to speak on any subject, as long as the police consider their speeches lawful.

Everybody Draw Mohammed Day, also known as Draw Muhammad Day, was an online event supporting freedom of artistic expression in protest against those who threaten violence in retaliation for depictions of the Muslim prophet Muhammad, an act forbidden by Islamic texts. What started as a protest against Comedy Central’s decision to censor a depiction of Muhammad in the South Park episode “201” eventually grew to target Muslim extremists as a whole.
